I've read about the reports regarding ageplay. I was wondering if teenage looking avatars (14-17) is also forbidden. When I think in terms of reality, the consent for sex in some states go from 15-17. I ask because I am curious.Does Online Game Second Life Also also Forbid Teenage looking avatars from having virtual sex?
Just about anything goes in SL, but sex with minors - with players really under 18 in real life, or over 18s having sex with avatars that are clearly supposed to look under 18 - is considered a bannable offence. Just saying 'Well my avatar might look 14, but she's supposed to be 19 really' isn't going to cut any ice.
Whilst some states may have a sexual consent age lower that 18 (here in the UK it's 16), 18 is considered to be the maximum age for some areas, so my guess is that it's to comply with areas in the world where that age is the age of consent.
The actual looking 18 thing is a bit of a grey area as in real life, people may look a bit older or younger than they really are. Same goes for SL and I think that unless you have both a young looking avatar and dress it in young clothing, not too much fuss will be made. The real no go area is sex using avatars that are clearly very young - say 7 or 8 years old in appearance - where it is obvious that there can be no doubt how young the avatar is intended to be. In these cases where a very young avatar is involved in simulated sexual activities in SL, all concerned are banned for life from Second Life via IP recognition, and the local authorities in the locale where that person lives are informed as to the individual's behaviour.
Of course, it does happen. In any free society, be it real life or a virtual world, there are always some people who want to live out their fantasies. Most people's fantasies are acceptable because they involve two or more people who consent to the activity and are aware of what is happening and why. But in the case of simulated sex with child avatars - even though the participants are adults and know what they are doing and consent to it - society generally believes that such activities are unhealthy and may likely lead to at least one of the individuals wanting to fulfill the fantasy with a real child in the real world.
Like most people in SL, I don't like to see these activities taking place there, but I do have a serious gripe with the owners of SL in that they frown upon simulated child sex in SL (quite rightly), but freely allow forced rape simulation areas to exist in SL. Violently gang-raping a woman, beating her and leaving her for dead is not my idea of a healthy role-playing experience and the same critisisms levelled at role-playing child sex in SL, should (in my opinion) also apply to people who partake in forced rape role-play in SL. I'm not talking about the BDSM scene here - just specifically the idea of role-playing gang-rape and murder.
As for avatars who look under 18 in SL - there are loads. There are a lot of people who play child avatars and some play as children in families in SL. It's not something I've ever felt the need to do, but some of my friends have child avatars in their SL 'families'. I have one avatar that I see in my mind's eye as being about 17. Myself and another friend play in a large Final Fantasy themed area. Think of Rikku in Final Fantasy X (but with a Stratocaster guitar, guns and double kitanas) and you get the idea of what that particular avatar is all about. She also plays as a young pirate girl on some sims, and as a Myazaki-type steampunk heroine in some Victorian areas in SL. She is NEVER used for sexual activities, although she does get asked continuously by various creeps in SL.
