Whats a good virtual life online game? are they free?

I want to join one of those virtual online life games where you can create your own person and have like a whole life in the game. I heard some you can even like open a virtual store and actually sell stuff (I dont know if thats true) anyways, I want to join one... anyone know a good one? and are they free? The Sims- It is a good one except there is no online play.
