What are some free virtual life games?

I've tried some like Second Life, and There, but you have to pay for some aspects of them. Also, are there any that are strictly online?I would rather not download anything, jsut play the game online. Is there any games like that? I'm thinking games like the sims, that sort of virtual life thing
